The new certification gold standard for records management professionals seems to be an Information Governance Professional (IGP). You must have the experience, a high level of schooling, and be willing and able to do some hard exam preparation to attain this certification. Does it make you any better? Does it make you work harder? Do you have a step up on your peers?
You would assume that after you attain this certification, you will get paid more. Not so fast. You almost always need to move to a similar position elsewhere where there is a ladder for you to climb and hold a more responsible position. It is assumed that then you will get paid more. You could have the ambition and know-how to earn CRM and/or IGP certificates and still be in a coordinator position. Why you would stay there, I am not sure. Everyone with smarts and ambition wants to improve, to make more money, to be held in higher regard by your peers, and to have a better life for you and your family.
If you have taken the time, resources, and energies necessary to attain an IGP certificate, then do not hesitate to move on. There are positions out there crying for a candidate with an IGP. The records field on a local level is a small community, where you can search out a mentor who will assist you in honing your skills and advise you whether to stay in your current position or to move and find a ladder to climb.
Almost every professional records person can and should be a mentor to someone, whether that person is junior or senior to you. It is part of the culture and mindset of the records community to help others. The IGP is tasked to uphold the highest ethical and professional practices; I believe a part of that is to be a mentor and to \others. You may be looking for a mentor, or you can be one to someone else, or both.
