One of our favorite sessions at the 2021 American Association of Law Libraries virtual conference this year was entitled How to become the Trusted Advisor: Developing Analytical Skills to Enhance your CI Reports. This valuable program emphasized that consistency and branding in competitive intelligence reports is instrumental to creating trust so that your clients know the sources of the information.
What Our Clients Can Expect from CI Reports
Providing consistent and insightful CI reports to our Accufile clients translates into trusted partnerships. We provide branded deliverables that contain insights and analysis to our clients. And while we utilize templates for reports on individuals, companies, and industries that include standard and consistent information, each report can be customized to meet a client’s targeted information needs. Each report references the sources consulted during the preparation of the report.

And as we want to help our clients broaden and grow their business, we may include information outside of the scope of what you have asked for it if we think it will be useful. We frequently broaden our scope to include sources that are helpful, but often overlooked. For example, job postings can be a gold mine of information, especially with startups. We may look at what recent patents a company has filed. We may also spend time reviewing a company’s LinkedIn, Twitter, or other social media posts to locate information that may not be included in traditional news databases.
Other Useful CI Resources
The panel of experienced CI researchers during this AALL conference session shared some other useful tools that may be overlooked for locating valuable, hard-to-find information. For example, Terms of Service or Privacy Policy links on a website can be useful when searching for information on individuals and smaller companies. Researchers may try doing a full-text search on a research platform such as Intelligize to search for any mentions of smaller companies that may be included in larger companies’ SEC filings. Another useful example: when looking for information on public hospitals or airports, you can search for municipal bond official statements that can provide information about the entity’s structure. Another presenter suggested offering adjacent information for requesters as this can be a great value-add. Accufile researchers employ these approaches and more when compiling competitive intelligence reports for clients.
